Visually Literate High School Art Show
The annual “Visually Literate” High School Art Exhibition will open to the public on May 9, display in the Appleton Gallery at Shawnee State University.

From 130 pieces submitted by students from Clay, East, Green, Minford, New Boston, Oak Hill, Northwest, Portsmouth, South Webster, Valley, West, and Wheelersburg school districts, Judge Benjy Davies, artist and professor of art at the University of Rio Grande, narrowed down the submission to 51 pieces for exhibit. There are seven categories, including black and white drawing, color drawing, painting, sculpture, mixed media, utilitarian three dimensional work, and photography, graphic arts, digital media.

“I was really amazed by the quality,” Davies said. “A lot of the students seemed to be thinking about a journey, or a movement. They seem to be thinking about their personal growth, as well as social and political issues, and I thought that kind of engagement was really encouraging. We always hear about young people being disengaged and not being interested. These young people clearly are interested and are engaged in the broader world.”

The exhibit will be on display May 9-17 in the Appleton Gallery, located on the second floor of the Vern Riffe Center for the Arts at Shawnee State University, in Portsmouth, Ohio.

There will be a Closing Reception and Awards Ceremony for the student artists at the college on Thursday, May 17, at 5:30 p.m., with the Awards Ceremony beginning at 6 p.m. As part of the Awards Ceremony, Davies will share his thoughts about the artwork and the exhibit. Students who participated in The Memory Project this year will also be recognized during the reception.  Light refreshments will be provided and admission is free to the public. From 5:30 to 6 p.m., the Northwest High School Jazz Band will be performing in the lobby while people are looking at artwork in the gallery.

This event is coordinated by Sharee Price of South Central Ohio Educational Service Center and is sponsored by General Electric Aviation – Peebles Test Operation, Gary and Marilyn Hairston, Richard D. Marting Foundation, Portsmouth Area Arts Council, Rotary Club of Portsmouth, Scioto Foundation, Shawnee Art and Hobby Supplies, Shawnee State University, and SOMC.
