Minford wins Junior High Quiz Bowl
Seventh- and Eighth-Grade students from Minford Middle School won the South Central Ohio Educational Service Center (ESC) Junior High School Quiz Bowl Tournament Wednesday, Nov. 1, with the Runner-Up title going to Green Junior High School.

Ninety-four students from 11 local Junior High schools (grades 7-8) participated in the Quiz Bowl Tournament at the ESC in New Boston. Students participated from Clay, East, Green, Minford, New Boston, Northwest, Notre Dame, Portsmouth, Valley, West, and Wheelersburg schools.

Each team played two matches to determine which two teams would advance to the Championship Round. The matches include questions in ten different categories including Math, Science, English, Social Studies, Literature, Current Events, Fine Arts, Health, General Knowledge and History. The final round is the Lightning Round where students buzz in to answer questions from a variety of topics.

“I’m always impressed with how much the students know about so many different subjects. I know their coaches spend a lot of time working with them at practices and I applaud their efforts.  This type of event encourages students to really work together as a team and it builds their self-confidence at the same time. So many parents and families come to watch the competition and it’s great to see students being recognized for their knowledge,” said Sharee Price, ESC Gifted Services coordinator.

Minford and Green were the final two teams playing in the Championship Round, with Minford winning the Championship and Green winning the Runner-Up Award. Jill McFadden is the coach for the Minford team and Molly Sylvia is the Green coach.

“My kids worked so hard. They worked during their lunches and they worked during our study hall. They also worked after school, so they put in a lot of hours studying and practicing. When we went to competition I was nervous because it was my first year, but I was super proud of them,” McFadden said.

Quiz Bowl is a team sport, she said, and in addition to encouraging learning, children participating also learn how to work with each other.
