Area high school students learned valuable leadership skills during a special workshop at the South Central Ohio Educational Service Center, in New Boston.
On Wednesday, Dec. 14, the Gifted and Curriculum departments of the South Central Ohio Educational Service Center (ESC) collaborated with local business owners involved in Southern Ohio Professional Partners to offer the program to students.
“This event is a wonderful opportunity for our local leaders of today to meet and interact with students who will become our leaders of tomorrow,” said Gifted Services Coordinator, Sharee Price.
One senior and one junior from each of 15 local high schools were invited to attend the Youth MAX Leadership one-day conference which focused on the principles of John C. Maxwell. Maxwell is a No. 1 New York Times bestselling author, coach and speaker who has sold more than 24 million books and is often called America’s number one authority on leadership.
Tammy Hambrick, Dawn Wallace, and Kara Copeland, ESC curriculum directors who are also certified Maxwell speakers, coaches, and teachers, provided the training. Members of the Southern Ohio Professional Partners served as small-group facilitators for the event. Each student participant received a copy of John Maxwell’s book, “Sometimes You Win, Sometimes You Learn,” provided with funding from the Portsmouth Area Ladies group.
When asked about expectations for the day, one student said, “A boring lecture.” After the session, when asked what they got, a student responded, “Much more! Life lessons and ways to get past failure.”
Plans are in place to hold the Youth MAX Leadership Conference annually for local high school students and to continue to partner with local businesses and organizations as the event grows.
