Colyer hired as CAPE principal
When the doors opened to begin another school year at the Center for Alternative and Progressive Education (CAPE) on Aug. 22, students met their new principal, Melissa Colyer.

Colyer began her teaching career in juvenile corrections, starting in West Virginia and later moving to the Ohio River Valley Juvenile Correctional Facility in Franklin Furnace. When that facility closed, Colyer moved down the road to accept a job as an intervention specialist at Green Local Schools. She obtained her administrative license from Ohio University, and was hired as CAPE principal in June, to succeed retiring principal, Milinda Davis.

CAPE is located in the South Central Ohio Educational Service Center in New Boston.

“CAPE is a place where kids who are struggling can come and have a safe place to learn and work their way back into their school district. These are good kids who have made bad decisions, so they come to CAPE to learn how to make good decisions,” Colyer said.

Students can stay at CAPE anywhere from nine weeks to an entire school year.

“We have a fabulous staff willing to work with what everybody else sees as a challenging group of kids. They are dedicated, passionate, and knowledgeable. I’ve got an amazing staff, and I can’t wait to work with them and meet the kids,” Colyer said.
