Art students in Mrs. Kelly Montgomery’s classes at Valley High School are learning about printmaking and collaboration through a South Central Ohio ESC Artist-in-Residency. Advanced students will be creating images to be displayed on banners in downtown Portsmouth during Winterfest 2019. Friends of Portsmouth began Winterfest in 2018 as a community celebration of the holidays and it was highly successful.

Artist-in-Residence, Klaire Smith, began working with students in Mrs. Montgomery’s classes on Sept. 23 and will be in the classroom for two weeks. Klaire is a professional printmaker and will be instructing students in techniques used to create linoleum block relief prints. Advanced students will then create images to be used on banners, while beginning art students will make relief printed holiday cards.

The project is being coordinated by Sharee Price, Gifted Services coordinator at the South Central Ohio ESC and is being sponsored by the Scioto Foundation, Portsmouth Rotary Club, and SOMC.
