78th Annual Honors Music Festival performs March 3
The Scioto County Junior High Honors Band, High School Honors Band and Honors Choir perform during the 78th Annual Scioto County Honors Music Festival at the Vern Riffe Center for the Arts, at Shawnee State University in Portsmouth, Ohio, on March 3.

207 local music students in grades 7-12 from Clay, East, Green, Minford, New Boston, Northwest, Oak Hill, Portsmouth, South Webster, Valley, West and Wheelersburg will perform in the music festival this year.

Students will be performing in one group concert. There are 50 members of the Scioto County Junior High Honors Band, 80 members of the Scioto County High School Honors Band, and 77 members of the Scioto County Honors Choir.

The Guest Conductor for the Jr. High Honors Band is Trish Torline of Winchester, Kentucky. Recently retired from teaching, Ms. Torline is active as a clinician and adjudicator in the region and also a composer of original music for middle level musicians.

The Guest Conductor for the High School Honors Band is Greg Wing, Professor of Trumpet at Morehead State University. Wing has performed with Bocelli, Pavarotti, the Las Vegas Philharmonic Orchestra, Paul Anka, Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett, Natalie Cole, and many others. He has conducted Honors Bands throughout Kentucky and Ohio. Professor Wing was also named MSU’s Distinguished Teacher of the Year in 2011.

The Guest Conductor for the High School Honors Choir is Dr. Roosevelt Escalante, Jr. Associate Professor of Music and Associate Director of Choral Activities at Morehead State University. Dr. Escalante conducts the University Chorus, Black Gospel Ensemble, and the Jazz Vocal Ensemble. He is an active conductor, choral clinician, pianist, vocalist, and arranger with domestic and international performance experience. He is also an avid composer of Gospel music.

During the Music Festival two students will be awarded scholarships to attend a college or university at which they wish to study music.

The evening begins at 7 p.m. on March 3. Reserved seating tickets are $7.00 each and are on sale at the McKinley Box Office, inside the Shawnee State University Vern Riffe Center for the Arts. The box office phone number is 740-351-3600, and its hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, and one-hour prior to the concert.
