Visually Literate High School Art Exhibition
To be "visually literate" means being able to gain meaning from what we see and being able to communicate meaning to others through the images we create. Each year Scioto County high schools along with Oak Hill High School are invited to submit up to 15 works of art for judging to become part of the Visually Literate High School Art Show.

Through the judging process the 50 top pieces of art are chosen to be included in this very selective show. Plans are in place for the show to be on exhibit from May 3 through May 16, 2023 in the Appleton Gallery at Shawnee State University. A Closing Reception is planned for May 16, 2023 in the Fine Arts Center at Shawnee State University starting at 5:30 p.m., with the Awards Ceremony beginning at 6:00 p.m.

Youth Art Month

In celebration of Youth Art Month, the Local History Department of the Portsmouth Public Library displays "Youthful Visions", an annual exhibition of artwork created by Scioto County High School art students.

The display consists of both two-dimensional and three-dimensional works in a variety of media. During the exhibit, bookmarks designed by the students are available to library patrons. Youth Art Month takes place during the month of March each year.

The Memory Project
Each year advanced high school art students create portraits of children living in orphanages in other countries as part of a nationally-known program called The Memory Project.

This project allows our students to make a contribution to the world through their artistic talents and provides children in third-world countries with a portrait of themselves (which is something they would never likely have otherwise). Portraits are created by our students and delivered to the children in the orphanages. A photograph or video is taken of the children receiving their portraits and that is sent back to our students.
Art Teacher Meeting
High school art teachers will have an all-day professional development meeting on Friday, Sept. 23, 2022 from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at the ESC.
